Ahmed, Palestinian shoemaker

Photo exhibition Faces of the Mediterranean

Al Shuhada street

Ahmed, a Palestinian shoemaker, most of his life has worked in a store on Al Shuhada street, Hebron's most important shopping street. Shuhada Street, Martyrs' Street, once the main artery of downtown Hebron, is now a ghost street. The stores are closed, everything is standing still. Yet more than 20,000 Palestinians reside in this part of Hebron. People forced to live locked in their homes because of the military occupation and the impositions of Israeli settlers. Since February 1994, in fact, this street has been controlled by the military with check-points, the stores were soon closed and Palestinian residents, in order to access their homes, have to do so only from the back through windows or through holes made in the walls.
