Life and economy in the time of covid-19

A day to reflect together on a more inclusive and sustainable model of economy.

Once again this year, despite the impossibility of holding the event in attendance, the usual John Paul II Foundation Day was held.

This year's edition was held on Saturday, December 12, live on Zoom, the Foundation's website and Facebook page @FondazioneGiovanniPaoloII, and was broadcast on a delayed basis on TSD, channel 85 on digital terrestrial television.

The event was attended by personalities from the institutional, business, Catholic and third sector worlds, who answered questions from the many secondary school children on the issues of life and the economy in the time of covid-19, to the evidence of the effects on habits and relationships and casting doubt on the certainties of the development models so defended by all Western economies.

During the event we made our own the invitation Pope Francis addressed to the world with "The Economy of Francis," taking the opportunity to revive the concept of a "fair economy," a new humanism that recognizes the primacy of man over the wealth indexes of rating companies.

The meeting, moderated by Marco Italiano, opened with greetings from the President of the John Paul II Foundation, Andrea Bottinelli, and continued with speeches by:

  • Marco Bentivogli, former secretary general of the Italian Metalworkers' Federation - FIM CISL;

  • Pierluigi Castagnetti, former MEP and Member of Parliament of the Italian Republic, member of the Scientific Committee of the John Paul II Foundation;

  • Edoardo Nesi, writer, former deputy of the Italian Republic;

  • Ernesto Pellecchia, director general of the Tuscany Regional School Office;

  • Alessio Marco Ranaldo, former president of Confindustria Toscana;

  • David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament and member of the Scientific Committee of the John Paul II Foundation;

  • Carlo Simonetti, head of the project office, joined by cooperators from the John Paul II Foundation;

  • Sister Alessandra Smerilli, economist, academic and economic advisor to the Vatican Council of State.

Thank you to all the guests who attended, to the children and to everyone who logged on to follow the Foundation Day. For those who were unable to watch the Day live, you can find the full video of the event here.
