Manal with daughter Ghina

Manal with her daughter Ghina. Manal is also the mother of Wadih, a 13-year-old Palestinian boy who was arrested and imprisoned by Israeli occupation forces while playing with his friends at the Beit Jala playground near the border with Israel.

Even today, some 500-700 Palestinian children in the West Bank are tried and detained under Israeli military law every year. They are the only children in the world to be systematically tried by military courts, with unfair trials, violent arrests, often at night, and coercive interrogations. The most common charge is stone-throwing, for which a sentence of up to 20 years can be imposed. They are subjected to emotional and physical abuse in prison, and health care and psychosocial support are very limited for them.
