Invitees to a wedding, at St. Catherine's Church in Bethlehem, waiting for the bride and groom to arrive.

It is a tradition for Christians in Bethlehem to marry at the centrally located Church of the Franciscan Friars, located next to the Basilica of the Nativity.

The presence of the separation wall has greatly reduced travel, making the city an enclave, which also affects engagements. For Muslims then, where it is traditional to marry between even first cousins, this has led to an increase in deafness, which is the second leading cause of disability in Palestine. Deafness affects about 3 percent of the population and in the most isolated areas as much as 15 percent, among the highest rates in the world. The cause is mostly related to two factors: inbreeding and heredity.
